If you're interested in why the Google logo has black tape over it today, there is a big virtual strike going on with some of the interwebs' biggest players, like Google, WordPress and Wikipedia. They argue that these bills will restrict how websites operate, and what you can share via social media. Wikipedia, for instance, is offline today, and WordPress is suggesting that bloggers go dark today as well. Here's a list of companies against this new legislation. There are lots of ways this can impact bloggers, which is naturally what concerns me most. If you're interested in reading more, I suggest you start here or here.
Off my soapbox now, I promise :)
So, here's what I've got going in my sewing room today...
Finished up:
All January bee blocks - yay!
Pouches for my mom and niece - stay tuned for more about these little guys tomorrow or Friday
New this week:
A new secret project - I've got some lovely Art Gallery fabrics I'm working with on a new secret project. I wish I could show you more, but I can tell you that these lovelies have a magnificient hand to them - so silky soft!
Birthday gift for my nephew - My nephew turns two in a few weeks, and I'm trying to think up something I can make for him...so far, I'm a bit stumped - and taking suggestions!!!
What are you working on this week? Write it up and share it over at Lee's WiP Wednesday linky. It's a great way to encourage each other to finish projects and celebrate finishes. Have a great day!
Adorable pouches, Elizabeth! And your bee blocks are gorgeous. For your nephew, you could look through the Oliver & S Little Things to Sew Book -- my nephew also turns 2 in a few weeks, and I'm planning to make him a draw string bag and fabric balls -- patterns in this book!
ReplyDeleteHi Elisabeth! Your projects are wonderful! I haven't done any blocks lately and now I miss that!
ReplyDeleteI'll go to see your links ... something I saw around the internet but don't know what's going on?! I do hope they don't change anything about our blogging because this is so important to all of us!
x Teje
I just made my two-year old nephew a toddler backpack from made-by-rae using green echino car fabric. He thinks it's the coolest thing ever, and uses it to carry around his monster trucks.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that was going on! Thanks for the links!
ReplyDeleteAs a Canadian I can only ask that you and other Americans will speak out against this legislation. I love your blocks and that new project looks great!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blocks!! And pouches!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on the legislation! Wow.
Your blocks all look fabulous, and those pouches are adorable! I'm a little stumped also on a gift for your nephew, maybe a fun "boy" softie??
ReplyDeleteLove your blocks! For some boy sewing ideas, you might like Made by Rae's and Dana Made It's Celebrate the Boy. They both have a ton of great tutorials on boy things that I have made my son and he loves them. There is a great lego drawstring sack (via Made by Rae), dino tail (via Dana Made It), and monster art bag (via Made by Rae) that my 2 yr old would love! Can't wait to see what you make!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on the strikes, I had no idea. Love all your bee blocks (any idea what's happened with do.Good?)
ReplyDeleteYour pouches are super cute too. hmm.. handmade for a 2 yr old boy? I made this for my daughter at 2... http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/08/jump-hop-count-number-playmat.html She is hot and cold with it. Sometimes she loves it, others she ignores it. Kind of like all her toys!
Great projects! I think a drawstring bag would be great for your nephew. I made an apron for Luke when he was a little younger, and he still wears it all the time. Free pattern here:

You have so many wonderful sewing projects going on. I love them!
ReplyDeleteagreed on the web business, and i love the polaroid blocks. for the nephew, i was going to make for my 2 yr old a fabric tent and pitch it on a green shag carpet from ikea- here's a tute, via sew mama sew: http://mycakies.blogspot.com/2011/05/diy-frame-tent.html
ReplyDeleteif you are into a large easy project...
Yippee Skippee for secret projects :) So fun and mysterious. You could do a softie quiet book for your nephew. My 2 year old loves hers ;)
ReplyDeleteI just made dinosaur tails for all my kids for Christmas - they whip up so easy. I found the tutorial through Sew Mama Sew's lists in November. All my kids, including my two-year-old Henry, love theirs.
ReplyDeleteLove that polaroid bee block. Such a cool idea!
The bee blocks are gorgeous! You're a bit further along than I am, as you probably noticed. LOL. Thanks for linking up to WIP Wednesday. : )
ReplyDeleteOh, and down with SOPA. I totally get the reasons for it, but this is not the way to fix the problem!
Wow wow wow! Terrific blocks! So inspiring!
ReplyDeleteYou're the block queen! Wow :-) I love those fabrics you've got cut up for your nephew, too! I'm having stash envy ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have a four year old boy and what I so wish someone would make for HIM is one of those lego storage things Lee featured over at Freshly Pieced... while he's probably too young for legos I bet he has some blocks or duplos that would fit great in there (or could be incorporated into the gift!)

You are the bee block queen! That's a lot of blocks. They all look wonderful as always. Cute pouches too. How about a toy bag for the nephew? My kids love hauling their toys around in the little bags I've made them.
ReplyDeleteHow about a patchwork Scotty dog? My godson still sleeps with "Patches" and he's almost 5!
ReplyDeleteThanks for being on your soapbox for even a short while. I'm a blogger outside USA and have not heard anything about this stuff but, naturally, it affects me (and a lot of other non-US bloggers) too!
ReplyDeletei totally know what you should make him.... http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/03/toddler-backpack/
ReplyDeleteit is perfect! my kids love love them!
Great makes for the week! I'm intrigued to see where these bills will go, because although I'm not in the US, I'm sure there will be far-reaching effects which we can do nothing about... :oS

ReplyDeleteI'm making this for my nephew's 2nd. But no magnets.
Beautiful stuff as always!
My favorite of your bee blocks would have to be the polaroid blocks. Wow polaroid is hard to type! :)
ReplyDeleteIf your nephew is into cars, you could make him this car roll-up: http://pacountrycrafts.blogspot.com/2011/10/car-roll-tutorial.html.
What a productive week for you!
Wow, all those blocks are so great, I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite! Well, maybe the polaroid block :-) Good luck on your secret project ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow about a Patchwork mat for your nephew's room? Have a look at the "Funky Bath Mat" I made, shown on my Flickr page under "koshka2 photostream". You could use an upholstery or linen fabric for the backing instead of towelling. I am making one for my Granddaughter's room as she will be 2 next month. Happy sewing!
ReplyDeleteYes, yesterday was quite an interesting day on the web! I hope that our representatives will vote against these bills.
ReplyDeleteThat weathervane block is just so fun! My only suggestion for your nephew is a cute pair of pajamas. But he would probably like something that he can play with instead of clothes. ;)
Cute pouches!
ReplyDeleteI've thought about your birthday query for a few days. I was going to suggest something like Colleen did . . . a large, circular play mat with a drawstring. But turn it into a play land, like roads to drive cars on or a dinosaur park. Beautiful work, as always!
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest a toy bag, too - maybe one with a vinyl window so you can see in? I can dig up a link if you're interested. Also: I totally agree with Lee. The proposed legislation is not the way to deal with the problem.
ReplyDeleteThe January bee block bottom left is gorgeous and not just because of the SH fabric! You rock the bee blocks!
ReplyDeleteWhen my nephew turned two I made him an apron. He was always trying to help out in the kitchen. I found some kid sized utensils and made a little backpack to keep it all in.
