I used Amber's super fab iPad cover tute, which is written fabulously. Trust me, my silly mistakes are totally my own fault! Sometimes, I'm real lazy when it comes to tutorials online. I tend to not print them out to refer to when I'm sewing, so I work from memory...and sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't.
Whoops #1:
Not only did I put the flap on upside down, but I lined the quilting up wrong, so the quilting (on the wrong side of the flap) is perpendicular to the quilting on the rest of the pouch. Sigh.
Whoops #2:
Darn that Velcro. I never put the Velcro in the right place with darned Velcro pouches. Velcro and I just are not buddies. Sigh.
I'm proud of myself for not throwing a temper tantrum over these little mistakes, which tend to get under my skin, and focusing on how much my husband loves the cover. I think I may try again to make a new cover...just not today :) I hope your first project of the new year is going better than mine did!
I recently used that tutorial also and thought it was great! I started with velcro and then decided to do a buttonhole/button instead.I actually like how your quilting on the flap runs in the opposite direction to the rest of the quilting! :)

ReplyDeletethe pouch looks great from here. my guess is that your hubs wouldn't have even noticed the mistake if it wasn't pointed out to him. mine wouldn't have, anyway! :)
Doesn't look too much like a failure to me! For me, velcro is one of the hardest things on earth to sew with. I usually don't get it right the first time I try (every single time! Drives me nuts!) and I have been sewing with velcro for years and years :)

ReplyDeleteI have the same problem with quilt patterns and recipes - can't follow them at all! And it is tricky to match up that Velcro isn't it?! I had the same problem with an iPad case I made (for me), too!
ReplyDeleteI also always have a hard time lining up velcro or snaps! I think its just fabulous, and the offset quilting just makes it unique :-)

ReplyDeleteI think it looks great and agree that the quilting makes it more interesting! Whenever I have to use velcro I use the sticky stuff, that way you know it matches and then sew it down with an old needle!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, though! And the quilting change is kind of fun. I agree about the velcro thing - there has to be a better way to make it match up. Mine is always off, too.

Velcro and I seem to not be to good of friends either. I am glad to hear I am not the only one that has that problem :) And way to go for focusing on the positive that your husband loves it, that is the most important part :)

I love the case as is, maybe just adjust the velcro or ditch it for a snap? If you do another, then he can have two, for different moods.

Well this has cheered me up no end! My first 2012 make was today, and I attempted to make a cover for my new kindle. Obviously measured completely wrong, and I now have a lovely little pouch that my kindle doesn't fit in! I'm glad I'm not the only one...lol! for what it's worth, I think your case looks fab, and at least the ipad fits!!

ReplyDeleteI really like your iPad cover! I followed the same pattern and used Amy Butler Home Dec fabric. The pattern is well written and I plan on making three more for my grandchildren. You need an iPad for yourself! Just download the tut and keep it handy right next to your sewing!

ReplyDeleteNow I don't feel so bad - I have the hardest time following instructions and end up doing whatever at least twice. However, mine still doesn't look as good as yours ended up looking.
