Quilty Fail #1 of 2012: iPad cover for the husband

I have a secret to tell you...you know how I don't usually follow patterns?  There's a really good reason for it.  I am dreadful at following a pattern.  The latest example is this iPad cover I made for my husband's new obsession.

I used Amber's super fab iPad cover tute, which is written fabulously.  Trust me, my silly mistakes are totally my own fault!  Sometimes, I'm real lazy when it comes to tutorials online.  I tend to not print them out to refer to when I'm sewing, so I work from memory...and sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Whoops #1:
Not only did I put the flap on upside down, but I lined the quilting up wrong, so the quilting (on the wrong side of the flap) is perpendicular to the quilting on the rest of the pouch.  Sigh.

Whoops #2:
Darn that Velcro.  I never put the Velcro in the right place with darned Velcro pouches.  Velcro and I just are not buddies.  Sigh.

I'm proud of myself for not throwing a temper tantrum over these little mistakes, which tend to get under my skin, and focusing on how much my husband loves the cover.  I think I may try again to make a new cover...just not today :)  I hope your first project of the new year is going better than mine did!

  1. I recently used that tutorial also and thought it was great! I started with velcro and then decided to do a buttonhole/button instead.I actually like how your quilting on the flap runs in the opposite direction to the rest of the quilting! :)

  2. Thanks for sharing a failure. It's good to know that even accomplished sewers make mistakes. :) I always try to post my failures (Friday Fails!) and laugh at myself too. :)

  3. Bugger! Although I think the perpendicular quilting actually looks great...

Can I just say its a relief that someone I respect as much as you in the quilty world makes mistakes? And shares them? It makes newbies like me feel so much better about stuffing things up :)

  4. That looks fab, I love the fabric you have chosen. Ive just started a linky party for people that have blogged about using a tut or written their own so that others can learn and get reviews and links to tuts that are good. If you fancy linking up its here http://lawsonandlotti.blogspot.com/2012/01/tutorial-tuesday-no-1.html

  5. i am a non-pattern user too!

the pouch looks great from here. my guess is that your hubs wouldn't have even noticed the mistake if it wasn't pointed out to him. mine wouldn't have, anyway! :)

  6. Doesn't look too much like a failure to me! For me, velcro is one of the hardest things on earth to sew with. I usually don't get it right the first time I try (every single time! Drives me nuts!) and I have been sewing with velcro for years and years :)

  7. Looks like a success to me! Who says that the quilting has to go in the same direction anyway.

  8. I have the same problem with quilt patterns and recipes - can't follow them at all! And it is tricky to match up that Velcro isn't it?! I had the same problem with an iPad case I made (for me), too!

  9. I also always have a hard time lining up velcro or snaps! I think its just fabulous, and the offset quilting just makes it unique :-)

  10. I believe that the perpendicular quilting is called a design element :)

  11. I think it looks great and agree that the quilting makes it more interesting! Whenever I have to use velcro I use the sticky stuff, that way you know it matches and then sew it down with an old needle!

  12. It looks great, though! And the quilting change is kind of fun. I agree about the velcro thing - there has to be a better way to make it match up. Mine is always off, too.

  13. There's me thinking it was a major fail - you can have that flap of and redone in the blink of an eye!

I used the same tute and posted about it today too!

  14. Velcro and I seem to not be to good of friends either. I am glad to hear I am not the only one that has that problem :) And way to go for focusing on the positive that your husband loves it, that is the most important part :)

  15. Never would have noticed your "fails"! My philosophy is that everything is a learning experience and if your hubby likes it, go with it!

  16. Fails ... pheetheew (thats kinda a rasberry, noise) ... its called customization, adding features yet to be determined functionality for.

Looks great! I know my daughter would love one for her Kindle, customized or otherwise :)

  17. I love the case as is, maybe just adjust the velcro or ditch it for a snap? If you do another, then he can have two, for different moods.

  18. Well, I think it loosk cute, and those mistakes just add to the endearment factor!

PS - I have problems following tutorials and patterns too...

  19. Well this has cheered me up no end! My first 2012 make was today, and I attempted to make a cover for my new kindle. Obviously measured completely wrong, and I now have a lovely little pouch that my kindle doesn't fit in! I'm glad I'm not the only one...lol! for what it's worth, I think your case looks fab, and at least the ipad fits!!

  20. Hi! You made a beautiful case! I'm the same. I like to think on my own how to make something but sometimes if I see great tutorial I think I remember it and later I need to re-plan by myself.
And I forget that I could use that Velcro! x Teje

  21. Those are not design flaws...those are design features :)
I actually like that the quilting goes in opposite directions!

  22. They're not mistakes, they're design features ;o) Well, except maybe the velcro, but hey, just throw some more on there further down and call it done!

  23. Thanks for sharing. It made me chuckle because I thought I was the ONLY one who made mistakes!!!

  24. lol, you are too funny. I like the fabric you chose though!

  25. I really like your iPad cover! I followed the same pattern and used Amy Butler Home Dec fabric. The pattern is well written and I plan on making three more for my grandchildren. You need an iPad for yourself! Just download the tut and keep it handy right next to your sewing!

  26. Awwwww...I really like it! The quilting on the tab can be a design feature =D who says the quilting all has to go the same way?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Looks good to me! I'm glad the hub's iPad isn't naked anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now I don't feel so bad - I have the hardest time following instructions and end up doing whatever at least twice. However, mine still doesn't look as good as yours ended up looking.

  29. lol! you poor dear! he will never know the difference... ;) and i think it looks awesome!

  30. The "Whoops" quilting looks great! And it's nice to see mistakes once in a while :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Im terrible at following patterns! You know how the pattern always says to read all the directions before start? pffft I say and of course I always end up with a problem ;)

  32. Not to worry! At least this is just an iPad case and not all of the blocks for a queen-sized Storm at Sea quilt that aren't coming together. See it could be worse ;-)
