The packing is going surprisingly well this week and so is the purging. It's truly amazing how much stuff you accumulate when you live somewhere for a long time. After I packed up my fabric yardage, I decided to take a little sewing break and start on a project I cut out a while back that I then immediately misplaced, as I'm pretty well known to do. See, we called my dad "the Mad Mover" - he was constantly tidying things up and putting things in strange places. And I clearly got the Mad Mover gene, because I do the same thing, all the time. I'm constantly hunting for things I've misplaced, and I often give up, figuring that the missing item will turn up eventually, and that's exactly what happened with this stack of fabric...
The taller stack is a stack of aqua and teal solids from my stash, some Kona, Art Gallery, Michael Miller, and Bella solids. The smaller stack is various low volume prints, in larger squares and then also in smaller squares. I had an idea for the Negative Space Challenge that my local chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild is working on finishing up this month, cut the fabric out, then put it somewhere strange and never saw it again until now. I suppose it's good timing, since it's a smaller project, and having a little something I can work on sewing in between packing duty is nice.
I'm really digging these stars, and the way they're coming together. I love the pixelated background and the depth it gives the negative space, I think it makes the negative space almost sparkle. And all of these aquas and teals together just make me happy. Such a calming, soothing group of colors, don't you think?
Do you lose things in your sewing space like I do? Or is your craft room always neat and tidy? I often wish I could be tidier, but sometimes finding things that have been lost for a while can be a fun, forgotten surprise, so I almost enjoy being a Mad Mover! Have a great day :)
I'm not packing to leave, but I am purging at the moment. I am always putting things somewhere safe where I will not lose them and then have no idea where they are when I need them. I'm currently looking for a new presser foot for my Janome 8900. I just got it last week! Your block is beautiful as usual. Love the pixilated background.

ReplyDeleteI hate the disgusting state of my sewing area, I can't find anything. When it gets so bad I can't stand it anymore I tidy it up & put things away and I put them away so well I still can't find anything!

Funny-every time I lose something in my space that is only about 5 by 5 I think seriously where could that have gone. Eventually it always shows up sometimes its just a matter of time. But it always leaves me thinking duh that's where that went.
ReplyDeleteIsn't moving horrible? I'm doing it right now also and I hate it! We've purges so much crap it's scary. I too had a pack up all my fabric but I also left one project out so I don't die from withdrawal! haha I'm am excited though because in my new house I get an actually sewing room!!!

That stack is a great find. Constantly misplacing and rediscovering projects and notions in my sewing room and then get totally distracted while looking which leads to more new things to do. Our MQG chapter is just starting a negative space challenge, can't wait to see your progress.

ReplyDeleteYour background reminds me of sea glass. So pretty! I just found three months of instructions and blocks from a 2010 BOM that I tucked neatly in a binder and stuck on the bookshelf. Forgot all about it until I came across it this week!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful project! My problem is the opposite. I can't relax and create until my space is clean. Then I create and make the mess so I have to clean. Then my incredibly talented and creative daughter gets her hands on my room and mayhem ensues. It has taken years for my daughter to learn how to clean up her messes.....so I used to end up having to do all of that before I could create - which often meant that I used all my spare time cleaning up and none of it creating. Finally, she has learned and usually can get it clean. Usually.....

ReplyDeleteI admire my sewing room. I found an armoire off Craigslist for $50 handmade from the org. creator. I try to be as organized as possible since,if your in the kitchen you are looking into my creative space. I use ball jars for notions and trims. When I am consistently sewing I have a basket where my thread clipping scissors,fabric marker,fabric glue,basting needles,small ruler,2 inch square and seam ripper wait to be used. It is handy at to the right of my sewing machine. Projects that I am working on tend to wind up folded neatly and placed on my ironing board so I don't loose them. If it is a project that is a; come back to before I want to rip it to shreds kind of project, it goes in a drawer of my armoire. All usable scraps go in a 8 gallon vintage tin flour canister. Small hand sewing projects-the type to grab and go when you need a little somthin' somthin' for the road are in a colorful zipper pouch. Hope i'm not boring you with all of this :) I love jars though..I have MANY vintage Ball jars including wire to zinc tops to blue to clear 1/2 gallons. I try my best to clean any rubbish off the floor and my cutting table before going to bed. I feel inspired when I can just sit down and start up the machine rather than having to clean threw my mess to be able to work. It is helpful. Same goes for my kitchen.. :) Can't drink my coffee until its clean.
Gorgeous! And yep, lose things all the time. Especially my seam ripper, since I appear to use it too often to remember to put it back in its place... With the schrapnel I've had littering my table lately, I've lost entire chunks of patchwork!

ReplyDeleteI am a Mad Mover, but only for the last little bits. Due to my late husband's illness, I ended up moving us twice in just a little over a year. When I first packed, everything was organized: box after box of books - fiction, non-fiction, genealogy. Then boxes by room - kitchen, bedroom, bathroom. At the end I had a box labeled: "cat's dish, bath towel, mail, nightgown, lawn sprinkler". The movers asked what room to put it in and I said "my sewing room", of course.
i work in the chaotic environment of ER...to cope i have always made sure things got put back so i can find them in a hurry when i need them...this makes me organized in my studio at home...
ReplyDeleteI suffer from "oooo..shiny!" syndrome and am constantly losing everyday objects. I once lost my scissors while I was working on a project and didn't move. (They were wedged in the couch.) So...um...yeah.
ReplyDeleteMad mover! Just the other day I found two yards of the same fabric, different cuts, I hadn't realized I had bought it twice! Oh well...at least I know ideally love it!
ReplyDeleteSo there's a name for it! I am definitely a mad mover. And we are also in the midst of moving/organizing/purging right now, and it is pure chaos. I feel bad for my husband, his OCD is through the roof right now! Love that background for the stars!

ReplyDeleteI absolutely do the same thing! I have even gone and bought the item again in frustration because I needed it "now", only to find the original soon after! When I am sorting things I always think that I will remember, but so often I don't.
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm a bit of a neat-nick. Not to the extreme but I do like to be able to find what I want when I want it. Not being able to locate something is too stressful. The colors and fabrics that you are using are terrific and I can't wait to see how it all turns out.
