I've been brainstorming for the right project for my partner in the latest round of the
Sew Sew Modern swap, hosted over on Flickr, and I'd been hitting a creative wall, a total lack of inspiration. That is, until I came across an idea in my sketchbook that I had early on when I started the
Lucky Stars Block of the Month Club last year - a medallion quilt. As soon as I stopped on that page, I knew it was perfect. The drawing was terrible, and totally the wrong color palette for my partner, so I took some time last night and redrew it, and I have to say, I'm really excited to start working on this.
Now that my Juki has made it home safe and sound, I'm
this close to being able to actually get the ball rolling on this one. I'm torn, though...I can't decide whether I should do this one up in all solids, or if I should use prints. I definitely want to use some low-volume prints in the background/gray areas, but I'm not sure about the actual focus fabrics. I think some nice tone-on-tone, small scale prints would be nice, but I'm just torn, I can't decide, so help a girl out - give me your two cents! Maybe that will help me make a decision and start cutting :)

DeleteVoted for youir cover!! It was hands down. I'm glad to see that there are still others using the old fashioned way of designing quilt ideas, ie. graph paper and pencils!! It's a delightful design. Can't wait to see it made up!

Glad your machine is back! It's always tough when mine is at the shop. I think that a combo of solids and prints would look fantastic in this design. Maybe use solids for the stars and prints for the borders, or strike that and reverse it. :)
ReplyDeleteI think if you are using low volume prints as background,you should use at least some prints in the figure--one-color prints or low-contrast prints. (Now I'll go back and read what others said; I didn't want to be influenced. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna go against the grain and vote for solids (or tone on tones)! I think that when the pieces are tiny enough, prints designs tend to get lost. To me, solids look a lot cleaner when there are lots of small(ish) pieces. I'm off to vote for your cover!
ReplyDeleteLove your drawing ~ seems medallion quilts are in right now. PMQG is doing a medallion along this year for it's block of the month and I'm in the Patchwork Society at Modern Domestic ~ we'll be making the Marcelle quilt from Liberty Love.
