I was super excited to finish up the backing for my Supernova quilt tonight. I am putting together some plus-style patchwork, and it's looking really awesome...or I thought it was, until I tried to finish putting it together. Only to find...
I screwed it up!
I should have labeled every single row here, but I felt like I kept them organized enough to avoid any headaches with the layout. Things seemed to be matching up, the rows came together super fast...I should have known something was too good to be true. Obviously, these fabrics should match up when they're right side up...not with one row right side up and the other wrong side up. :(
So, now, it's time to get up close and personal, again, with my seam ripper. I think I'm done cursing. At least for now. Between a seriously cranky, testy 3-year-old and these foibles tonight, I think it might just be time to call it a night. Argh.
Oh my gosh I am so sorry! That must stink! Time for some chocolate and a relaxing bubble bath!

ReplyDeleteThat stinks! I think I'd be saying a few choice words as well. You might need a day or two off from that one. Good luck with the seam ripper. I've done a similar thing, but then I started making the exact same mistake again. Then I felt extra stupid.

ReplyDeleteOh no. E, I'm so sorry, that completely sucks. I agree with Kelly - this happens to everybody. I had to redo an entire block of my DQS quilt because I trimmed it wrong (and I'm sure you remember how complicated and time-consuming those blocks were!) Good luck.
ReplyDeleteOh, all that work!! I'm so sorry!! That is the worst feeling! If you need to, walk away from it for the day and look at it again with fresh eyes. That and cussing always works for me!!
ReplyDeleteI've got a sassy three year old right now! And lately when I try to run away and sew for some relaxation, I've ended up doing a lot of "unsewing" myself! Hang in there!

ReplyDeleteUgh! No fun! Maybe it's a sign that you should make this into a quilt top instead... just do something easy for the supernova QAL and put that baby back to sleep for a while!

I wish I could say I've never done that, but it wouldn't be true. So frustrating! Hang in there. It will be lovely when it is done.
ReplyDeleteWell, E, it's no comfort, but I'm right there with you. Last night, I finished ripping out the last of ten blocks I had sewn for our MQG Kona Charm Challenge. We are supposed to have the top done by Thursday. I've been cussing all along too.

What a big, fat, **** mistake. We've all been there and all feel your pain especially those of us who manage to screw up time and time again.

ReplyDeleteYou know, I was thinking last night that if it were me, I'd use the bigger chunk, add solid (white?) big strips on the top and bottom of it, and use that as the back. Then you could use the skinny chunk as part of a back to another quilt. That way you wouldn't have to rip out anything!!

ReplyDeleteHi Elisabeth! I'm sorry, that's awfull! For me at least it happens now and then! Sometimes I think if there is two possibilities, how it usually goes the wrong way... I can't concentrate well so often that's the reason for my 'stupid' mistakes. Be pation and I hope you fix it quickly. That is going to be so beautiful quilt to have even the back so wonderful! I love squares and that is lovely way to connect them!

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, your quilt top is gorgeous!! And I love what you intended to do with the backing too.
I used to be a perfectionist and somewhere along the way to 50yo I gave that up a long time ago. If your quilt back were mine, I would be angry with myself at first but very quickly I would be laughing... and then I would go ahead and use the quilt back as is.
A beautiful example of "life is not perfect, we are not perfect, and that's okay!"
