After shedding a few tears and uttering many curse words, I think I can tell you how dreadfully my evening of sewing has gone.
I was super excited to finish up the backing for my Supernova quilt tonight. I am putting together some plus-style patchwork, and it's looking really awesome...or I thought it was, until I tried to finish putting it together. Only to find...
I screwed it up!
I should have labeled every single row here, but I felt like I kept them organized enough to avoid any headaches with the layout. Things seemed to be matching up, the rows came together super fast...I should have known something was too good to be true. Obviously, these fabrics should match up when they're right side up...not with one row right side up and the other wrong side up. :(
So, now, it's time to get up close and personal, again, with my seam ripper. I think I'm done cursing. At least for now. Between a seriously cranky, testy 3-year-old and these foibles tonight, I think it might just be time to call it a night. Argh.

Oh my gosh I am so sorry! That must stink! Time for some chocolate and a relaxing bubble bath!
ReplyDeleteOh, noooo! I'd have said a few unchoice words, myself, I'm sure. Poor girl. :/ I do love what you're doing, though. It's going to be an awesome back. You'll have a fabulous reversible quilt!
ReplyDeletei'm so, SO sorry! i seriously hurt for you right now. :(
ReplyDeletefwiw, it WILL look beautiful when it's all said and done. i know that doesn't help you right now, though.
Oh, what a bummer.
ReplyDeleteYou are so ambitious to do this pieced back, and then to have this happen . . . yuck!!!!!
Have a glass of wine and head to bed!
BDTD - my sympathy!! For what it's worth, I'd've cursed too.
ReplyDeleteThat stinks! I think I'd be saying a few choice words as well. You might need a day or two off from that one. Good luck with the seam ripper. I've done a similar thing, but then I started making the exact same mistake again. Then I felt extra stupid.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I'm really sorry...I really really hate using my seam ripper too!
ReplyDeleteI want to cry for you! This totally sucks! I'm so sorry! This happens to everyone, promise!
ReplyDeleteAwww... so sorry. I have done that more than I want to admit! I have to use that seam ripper on everything I work on at least once!
ReplyDeleteoh! that sucks! I am so sorry! Good luck! I hope it goes fast!
ReplyDeleteI'm still wincing a little for you. Totally something I would do. Deep breath. Tomorrow is another day.
ReplyDeleteOh no. E, I'm so sorry, that completely sucks. I agree with Kelly - this happens to everybody. I had to redo an entire block of my DQS quilt because I trimmed it wrong (and I'm sure you remember how complicated and time-consuming those blocks were!) Good luck.
ReplyDeleteOh, all that work!! I'm so sorry!! That is the worst feeling! If you need to, walk away from it for the day and look at it again with fresh eyes. That and cussing always works for me!!
ReplyDeleteI've got a sassy three year old right now! And lately when I try to run away and sew for some relaxation, I've ended up doing a lot of "unsewing" myself! Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteBlerg! I'm sorry. You know it's going it's going to be worth it when you get this quilt put together!
ReplyDeleteShucks! Can't wait to see the whole thing together!
ReplyDeleteOh Elizabeth... I am so sorry. If it makes you feel any better (I know it doesn't) you are not alone...
ReplyDeleteUgh! No fun! Maybe it's a sign that you should make this into a quilt top instead... just do something easy for the supernova QAL and put that baby back to sleep for a while!
ReplyDeleteOh my! That's a real bummer.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I feel your pain! If it's any consolation I think it will look great when done :/)
ReplyDeleteThat sucks. Time for a little break. And I feel your pain. My 2 yr old is working every nerve in my body the last few days. Must be a full moon.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I'm so sorry! I don't think I could bring myself to rip it at this point...I'd either do something else or be so angry and frustrated, I'd destroy it. =) (Don't tell.)
ReplyDeleteIt will look beautiful when you finish...whatever you end up doing!
I wish I could say I've never done that, but it wouldn't be true. So frustrating! Hang in there. It will be lovely when it is done.
ReplyDeleteWell, E, it's no comfort, but I'm right there with you. Last night, I finished ripping out the last of ten blocks I had sewn for our MQG Kona Charm Challenge. We are supposed to have the top done by Thursday. I've been cussing all along too.
ReplyDeleteoh gosh, what a bummer! backtracking on a sewing project is not fun!
ReplyDeletei hope today is a better one at the machine. :)
What a big, fat, **** mistake. We've all been there and all feel your pain especially those of us who manage to screw up time and time again.
ReplyDeleteOh you poor thing! Hopefully a decent sleep will allow you to look at this in a different light. We all know you ~ you'll fix it and it will be amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteOh no, that looks like quite a bit of unpicking! It'll be totally worth it though, because it's gonna look brill! :)
ReplyDeleteYikes! I feel your pain. I've made that mistake more times than I care to remember. The seam ripping will be worth it in the end. Your quilt looks great so far!
ReplyDeleteOh, I feel your pain! Ripping things out is the pits...especially when so many other things are trying your patience!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was thinking last night that if it were me, I'd use the bigger chunk, add solid (white?) big strips on the top and bottom of it, and use that as the back. Then you could use the skinny chunk as part of a back to another quilt. That way you wouldn't have to rip out anything!!
ReplyDeleteUgh, that SUCKS! I probably would have just sewn them together anyway, matching be damned. it's only the back, right?? ;)
ReplyDeleteOh no, that is super annoying. Hope it didn't take you too long to rip the seams...
ReplyDeleteYikes! That almost brings me to tears- it will look amazing when it is done though!
ReplyDeleteHi Elisabeth! I'm sorry, that's awfull! For me at least it happens now and then! Sometimes I think if there is two possibilities, how it usually goes the wrong way... I can't concentrate well so often that's the reason for my 'stupid' mistakes. Be pation and I hope you fix it quickly. That is going to be so beautiful quilt to have even the back so wonderful! I love squares and that is lovely way to connect them!
ReplyDeleteI wish you Happy Easter! Teje
I just looked at the picture and said 'awe, hmmm' since it looks just like something I would do... or something close to what I have done....
ReplyDeleteOkay, here's my totally different view of this.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, your quilt top is gorgeous!! And I love what you intended to do with the backing too.
I used to be a perfectionist and somewhere along the way to 50yo I gave that up a long time ago. If your quilt back were mine, I would be angry with myself at first but very quickly I would be laughing... and then I would go ahead and use the quilt back as is.
A beautiful example of "life is not perfect, we are not perfect, and that's okay!"
anyone else out there feel the same way?
