Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Vol 9

Quiltmaker has a new edition of their 100 Blocks publication hitting shelves soon - Volume 9! And Volume 9 is extra special to me, because it's the first magazine to publish my name on their cover. Eek! Look at that!! And not only that, my block is just to the left of my name. Can you guess which one is mine?

Yep, it's the rainbow one! My block, believe it or not, is a foundation paper pieced block, using an assortment of my scraps.

It's called Rubik's Star, and it's a really fun, versatile block. Take a look at a few layout ideas for it, just to give you an idea of the fun you can have with it...

Want to win a copy of 100 Blocks, Vol. 9 for yourself? Enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below by telling me what you do with your selvages - I'm gearing up to work on a big selvage project and I'm curious if I'm in the minority, hoarding every last one! Good luck, and I'll announce a winner on Monday, May 5th. Make sure to check out Quiltmaker's blog for even more fun giveaways :) Have a great weekend!

  1. I don't save my salvages, I just throw them away, I have seen a few projects done with them and they look great , but it is just not my style of project, happy sewing to all

  2. I give them to a friend who makes clothes for herself.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I save them and make small projects - pincushions etc. I have also used them as "ribbon" for gift wrapping :) I love your block and enjoy reading your blog. Congratulations!

  4. I am still saving them for a future project TBD! Sorry I discarded them for so many years!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Only just started saving them. Looking forward to a project.

  6. Before I started saving them for a friend, I used to make a ball of them and use them to tie up stuff. They're very strong and don't stretch. Now they go into a bag that I will give to Janet. I like your block, even though I don't much like paper piecing. Thanks for the giveaway.

  7. Congrats on being in the book and and great block! I just recently started saving salvages and use them to tie things. I want to use all of the fabric from a piece in regular projects, so my salvages end up not having very much color to them. Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. I've been saving me Selvages for a little while now, but haven't decided yet what I want to do with them.

  10. I cut the selvages off of my fabric with no wasted fabric that is usable. I do enjoy seeing what others do with their selvages...lot's of fun stuff out there but not for me.

  11. What a beautiful block! I have been saving selvages in a bag for awhile now. Someday I intend to make something with them... Thanks for sharing!

  16. I love your Rubik's block. I am planning my Red Zinger selvage project now. There are several selvage projects I have that I really like. I'm looking forward to starting this project.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't save mine. I don't have enough space to store all that extra, plus I would probably never get around to making something with them.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i have started saving them since i have seen all the creative ways to use them. it is great to see that no part of fabric is wasted. love your block, it is so creative! babscorbitt@gmail.com

  21. It cut off every usable part of the print and then throw the rest away. But now that I see others use them as gift ties, maybe I will save a few!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have been keeping my selvages, in hopes of making something with them some day. Don't have a lot yet, but there is always more fabric to buy!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I throw out mine but it's interesting to see what others make with theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I guess I will not be throwing away my selvages anymore, lol...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have been tossing my selvedges but I decided to start keeping them in a jar and if I don't use them I will be giving them to someone who does.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've thrown out quite a number of them, but I have started keeping a collection.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't save them...I have way too many scraps to use up! Thanks for giveaway & a great block!

  30. I save my selvages - I cut extra fabric so I have some color with the white. I have been saving them for a few years, and one of these days will find the perfect project for them! Thanks for the give away!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am currently saving my selvedges for a string block project. I love the look of them! Love your block, thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've saved them because it seems to do but I doubt I'd make a selvage quilt - I figure I can always give them to someone else who will love them and use them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Don't judge me, but I don't save selvedges. Your block is lovely, especially in the Ansonia prints.

    Dianne

    ReplyDelete
  34. I haven't done anything with my selvages. But, seeing all the cool things people do, I'm staring to save them for some eventual something!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am saving them for an undetermined project! I did see a really cute pair of tennis shoes covered in selvedges....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I throw them out. Maybe I should duck and run for that answer!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm very uncertain about selvages--I recently started saving them more diligently, but I also don't really care about them, so I wonder why I do it. belopminata@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  38. I cut them off and drop them into whatever dog bed is open and waiting for scraps of fabric, batting, or used dryer sheets. Then I sew them up and take them to the SPCA Thrift Store, where they sell them for a couple of dollars. Someone's pet gets a new bed, SPCA gets more funds, my fabric continues to live on.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I use (some of) my selvages to stake my tomato plants in the garden! Love your block!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't save my selvages. I don't have a ton of time to quilt/sew, so the selvages are not of high importance to me (at least not currently).

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm saving them to make a tote and possibly a string quilt. I saw a quilt someone made and I fell in love with it. Great block, I love all of the layouts. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the magazine. Congratulations on making the cover.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am wild and frivolous ..... I throw them away! Ha! :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm collecting them right now for that elusive project that requires them... Maybe a purse!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Over the years I have saved and used selvages on little zipper bags for cosmetics, hot pot pads, and squares for charity quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I picked out your block immediately. It just screamed "Don't Call Me Betsy".

    ReplyDelete
  46. So. um. I do nothing with my selvedges, they go straight in the trash. Although I read something recently that a local quilting guild is saving all the scraps and filling dog beds with them for the local shelter. I think I may start saving!

    ReplyDelete
  47. My selvages go in a bag to be donated for dog bed fillings for a local shelter.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I toss mine, I already have strings and strips and squares I don't have space for anymore containers

    ReplyDelete
  49. I save a lot of fabric scraps but now I feel guilty throwing selvedges away. Maybe they are worth saving also.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Congrats "Cover Girl"!! My selvages and other snippits get donated for dog bed stuffing. Thanks so much for the chance to win! :) Debby E

  52. I have reused some of the to tie up packages and rolls of fabric for storage-I have limited space so saving them is not a priority right now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love star patterns and would like to make yours. I give Selfridges away at my guild for stuffing dog pillows.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm saving them. I may make zippered bags out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  55. How exciting to see your name and block in print!

    ReplyDelete
  56. As a new quilter, I am really a fan of paper piecing. Makes complex blocks so much easier. I have kept my selvedges because of various blog posts saying they regret not doing so from the beginning. I don't have too many yet but hope to know what to do with them by the time I amass a pile. Thanks for the opportunity! notwendy gmail

    ReplyDelete
  57. I usually save them for a friend who makes totes and pillows with them. i find them hard to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I throw them away! I have saved one or two, but those are the fabrics with cute little things instead of the round dots of color.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I haven't done a thing with selvages yet, except save them!!! They have can into my scrap bins with all the rest

    ReplyDelete
  60. So far I've just been saving them. I'll probably start out with something small--I like the zippered bag idea.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Right now, I use them to tie up rolls or bundles of fabric. I've seen some people who have sewed them into a new piece of fabric, might do that some day. 24Tangent@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  62. First ones I used for key chains. Have crocheted some into rugs and bags. Also incorporated into block designs. They work great for "book" titles.

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is a fun tour and thank you for entering my name in the drawing. I have to say they end up in the waste basket , but I don't cut them off until I'm ready to use that part of the fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm saving my selvages to make a string quilt that I saw in a magazine awhile ago. I love your block and its kaleidoscope effect, Congratulations of making the cover with your block and name.

    ReplyDelete
  65. congrats, a wonderful block. Right now I am just saving them. I am thinking of maybe a pincushion and a small pocket purse for when I geo-caching with my husband.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I usually cut them up into very tiny strips for the birds (they build nests with them).

    PS Congratulations!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I have never saved selvages but now that I've seen lots of cute projects made with them I wonder if I've thrown away lots of treasures!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I don't save them... yet. I met a lady yesterday who saves ALL scraps and slivers and brings them to another lady who uses them to stuff heart pillows for people recovering from open heart surgery to hug. Even non-sewers are now hugging on fabric! :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I share all my selvages with a friend who makes various items. They are just too small for me to store. Plus it makes my friend really happy when I show up with a bag of them!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have begun saving my selvages, so I don't have a whole lot, but you just never know what could come in handy!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Congrats for making it in the magazine and to boot on the cover!! What a striking block! Depending on the different colors it really can have a 3-D look to it, very cool. It does look a little intimidating to me tho. I have been saving selvages but have not done anything with them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm still new to quilting so I hadn't thought to save my selvages....not sure what I would make with them

    ReplyDelete
  73. I save all my selvedges - but it's slow going!
I want to make a quilt eventually!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Congrats on being chosen for a block in the magazine. I love the block. The colors are wonderful. I do not do anything with my selvages, but I have seen lots of projects for them. I just do not have time to be able to work on those, and I think that they would drive me crazy because they can be very small, I think that is why I do not do string quilts either, but that is just me.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I usually use my selvages to tie rolls of fabric and scraps

    ReplyDelete
  76. No selvage saving for me. I'm not a scrap saver. Love your block!! Thanks for the chance to win!

  77. I have just started saving my selvages. I see so many quilty projects using them. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com

    ReplyDelete
  78. I save them if I remember! Try to trim off with 1/2" extra and throw into scrap bin. Thx for wonderful block and chance to win mag.

    ReplyDelete
  79. So far, I haven't done anything with them. The thing I've seen that I like best so far are tote bags or baskets.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I am ashamed to say that i discard them

    ReplyDelete
  81. I just toss them, but every time I see a cute selvage project, I wish I'd kept them. :) Congrats on the cover and great block!

    ReplyDelete
  82. As a new quilter I don't have very many selvages saved yet. I am saving them to make something...just don't know what. Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I've made one selvage project, and I have another in the works. I've got a big tub of them saved.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't keep them. I see the various selvage projects, and they all look so wonderful! But the majority of what I work wirh are sheets and other thrift store finds. Plus, it's just not my style.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Not into selvages. If there's is writing on them, I toss it. If it's pretty fabric on both sides, I save it for use like ribbon :-)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Never got the itch to create something with selvages. Some of the gals in our guide were making selvage projects so take the selvages to them. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I have the most wonderful bag from a gal in Australia and it is all made of salvages and I just love it. But I have to say that I usually just cut through mine...and think I should save those and make another wonderful bag to give to my daughter-in-law as a gift...but it is just a thought, as I have to plan that ahead of my quilting. Thank you so much for your foundation pieced block...that is something I love to do and will try yours when I get 100 Blocks. Love your colors.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I take my selvages to a couple of members of my local quilt guild. They make lovely projects out of them. I have other things I save and have no idea if I'll ever get to them, so I figured I didn't need another addiction! :-) Congratulations on making it into the publication and thank you for sponsoring the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I use selvages a lot, I think it encourages creativity, and it takes you back to the origins of quiltmaking.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I use some on my selvages to make the "bow" on the gifted quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  91. i throw most of them out, if they are cute enough i might use them to thread through a zipper pull on pouches/bags

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't make enough quilts to really accumulate many selvages, so I just toss the ones I cut off. Thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I save all my selvages, too. I saw a great quilt yesterday using a Rob Peter to Pay Paul block. The pie pieces were strip pieced using colored fabric and the crusts were salvages. The effect was colorful circles on a sea of white.

    ReplyDelete
  96. There is a basket of salvages at my local quilt shop, where people swap salvages. I donate my salvages to them.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I have saved some, but have not enough to do a project yet. I am inspired by all the lovely selvage projects I see. Love your rainbow block.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I generally thrown them away - or if they are large enough, use them for tomato ties.

    ReplyDelete
  118. All mine are diligantly saved - not sure what for yet. I now save every single scrap after reading 'sunday morning quilts' - but not been quilting that long so need a few more projects before a scrappy one!!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Sorry to say that I haven't saved the selvages. But after seeing all the wonderful things people do with them, I will start saving them to make a bag.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'm afraid I throw mine in a basket for use as stuffing. I'm not in the habit of cutting them off as one length. What I have saved pieces of though, at times, is the eyelashy selvage part. I can see those coming in handy for crafting. Don't know what for yet, but one day they will come in handy!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I don't save them, they end up in the trash. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I used to throw my selvages away and now I save them all. I want to start making items (mostly pin cushions and maybe small pillows and perhaps trim on aprons) for the boutique at our quilt show. Our show is every two years and it is this June and I got zero done for this year. Congrats on your publish, Elizabeth. Oh yeah. Selvages make good leaders, too.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I make pin cushions with mine..haven't saved enough or long enough to make more than that.... Can't wait to see what you are up to!

  124. Congratulations! Lovely block! I save my selvages. I haven't found a creative use for them, but I read somewhere about making fabric twine by twisting. I think I may try that!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Congratulations on the cover!!! I don't save them unless it's a fabric that I really love and then I keep them for reference.

    ReplyDelete
  126. This is sad, I guess. I use my selvages to tie tomato plants up in my garden.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Love your block! So far I've used mainly fat quarters, pieces from consignment stores or old apparel items. Since I have arthritis I only work on smaller items so most of my backings are also pieced.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I love this block so much, I can't wait to see the magazine. I do keep all my selvages, although I always trim from the non-selvage side of the fabric, so I only have a small shoe box full (but it is starting to get pretty jammed in there). I have only made one project, and it was a box pouch. I love the technique of sewing them down to a foundation. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Love your block. I usually keep my selvages, but don't have a clue what I will do with them.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I really don't use selvages for anything...I usually get smaller pieces so they aren't all that long. BTW, your neat block reminds me of origami.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I don't save the selvages. I do lots of scrap quilts, but the selvages just don't do anything for me.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I give my selvages to my friend as I don't use them for anything

    ReplyDelete
  133. I don't usually buy enough fabric to get a selvage but if I did I would save them. I seen a few things done with the selvage and kinda of like them. Congrats on being a Cover Girl. How cool is it that the picture is right next to your name. Love to win Vol 9. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I use as much as possible, I love scrappy look and will include them in target areas

    ReplyDelete
  136. I saved my selvage if it has a lot of color on it, if not I trash it. I plan to make something from them eventually :-).

    ReplyDelete
  137. So far all I do with selvages is save them:) I haven't gotten around to making anything with them yet, but plan to some day. Ribik's Star is so original and creative, plus it looks great.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I am a selvage -saver, too! I haven't made anything yet with them, but what a shame to throw away fabric that you paid for! Waste not, want not! Your block is adorable! Lots of movement!!

    ReplyDelete
  139. I haven't ever saved selvages, but when i see pretty projects that other people make, I look around at all the other scraps and my giant hoard and think... I really don't have room for this. Maybe after I move into a bigger house! haha!

  143. I love your block! I like the way it looks in a quilt. I don't save my selvages as I have too much other stuff to work on. I don't seem to get much accomplished though.

    ReplyDelete
  144. What a great block...and a great name for it! Congrats on having your name on the front cover! Way to go!! I have to confess...selvedges go in the circular file...

    ReplyDelete
  145. I use them to stuff loose pillows that become bedding for shelter dogs and cats.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I've always just tossed them in the trash. However, I now look at them more closely. Will this lead to another obsession?

    ReplyDelete
  147. I've just started saving my selvedges. I may cover a canvas bag with them when I've collected enough.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I haven't done much with the selvedges up to now, but the more I see what other's do with them, the more I think that I ought to save them. This is a great block-one that looks really easy to do. Thanks for creating it.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Great block - I love foundation paper piecing. I don't cut my selvages into usable strings so I'm not saving them. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I cut my selvages into random length strip and put outside for birds to use for their nests.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I haven't done anything yet because I have only been saving them for a little over a year. We moved from Illinois to Alabama last June. Our new house has a wonderful covered patio, and I want to get comfortable seating to make an outdoor living room. I think I want the cushions to be grey, and then I can decorate with pillows. I thought I would make one pillow using the selvedges. I also saw an idea for a bag made from selvedges that I liked. How wide do you cut your selvedges. I am afraid that I may not have cut mine wide enough. I guess it depends on how much you want the color of the fabric to show.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I have started saving my selvages because I have seen so many fantastic projects using them. I don't have very many yet, but I am hoping next year to do something with them.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I 've saved most of my selvages with the hope of someday using them. There are so many creative ideas out there, I'm not sure which project to choose!

    ReplyDelete
  155. I am still collecting my selvages :) I love the idea of a lap quilt made with them :)

    ReplyDelete
  156. Haven't made anything yet, but I am saving them.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Well, actually, I'm not doing anything with my selvages. I didn't think I had enough but I haven't checked lately. I should look at it and maybe I do have enough. I would like to a seat and a back cover for my rocking chair.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I love your block and your layout ideas - it is so cute that the corners form the little star! I have been giving my salvages to my friend, but she has made so many cool things out of them that I think I should try some myself. Thank you for the chance to win a giveaway!

  161. I am collecting my selvages right now with the intention of doing something with them when I figure out what that is. They are taking up a lot of space on my bulletin board where I drape them over pins. Looking forward to seeing what others do with them and getting a few good ideas.

  186. Round file them. I have enough projects with regular fabric, though I do find some selvage projects online to be cute, but not my style.

  187. My selvages go in the trash, sorry...bet it isn't what you want to read.

  188. The only thing I have ever done with selvages is to use them to make a bowl with clothesline. You wrap thin strips of fabric around the clothesline and stitch it together, round and round. The pattern called for 1/2 inch strips, and that is how wide the selvages are, so I figured, why not? It turned out cute!

  189. The only thing I do with selvages is to sometimes save a bit to remember the name of the fabric.
