Making friends with purple

Purple is a color that's sorely lacking in my stash - and with the naming of Radiant Orchid as the Pantone color of the year, I'm slowly trying to build up my purples, and use them. My purple stash is awfully malnourished compared to, for example, my greens or blues, which I should officially put a moratorium on buying!

Purple is just a blip in my stash...

Purple's never been my favorite color in the world, so it's not surprising that I don't have much of it in my stash...but if you're an avid fabric shopper like me, you're probably aware that purple hasn't been a super popular color in modern fabric collections in recent years. Seemingly, purple doesn't sit at the cool kids table in the color cafeteria, but maybe with Pantone choosing a shade of purple for the color of the year, that may change. Personally, I love a well-rounded rainbow in my stash, so I'm open to trying to make friends with purple, so the last month or so I've tried to add some new purples to the stash.

Some new purples to be shelved in the stash

I found these purple lovelies at Hawthorne Threads recently, and when I opened them this weekend, they made me think maybe purple's not so bad. I actually felt awfully inspired to put them into a project, so I might try to work them into my second Sew Sew Modern project, which is next up to get started on, pronto, since the mailing deadline is fast approaching. I made a good bit of headway on the first project this weekend and hope to wrap it up this week.

If you're trying to make friends with purple and need some motivation, check out the cool Radiant Orchid challenge hosted by my friend Anne of the fab Play Crafts blog and Adrianne of the On the Windy Side blog right here. There's even a whole section at Intrepid Thread dedicated to fabrics in the color of the year to help you get started, if you too need to make friends with purple. There's definitely quite a few nice purples out there these days! You can also find some great purples at I Don't Do Dishes, Pink Castle Fabrics, and Stash Modern Fabrics, too.

Some favorite purples in the stash...

What about you? Are you a purple fan? Have a great day today!

  1. Purple is not one of my favorite colors but I force myself to buy some like your stash mine lacks it but I also know I need it. I just get it in small quantities compared to all the lovely neutrals...which I love!!

  2. I found that I always had a soft spot for the quiet kids (not the totally strange personalities) in the cafeteria-and somehow I fit in with the popular to the quiet ones. So it is not surprising to me that I enjoy playing and hanging out with purple (depending on the hue) as well as the other colors.
I am still chuckling about purple, cool kids and cafeterias. So I am wishing you luck on meeting new friends in the purple world and working your way around the cafeteria!

  3. I'm right with you. Trying to add some of the pretty orchid purples to the projects and stash. Some even snuck into my Lucky Stars quilt! Hope to finish that one up soon!

  4. Probably all quilters have problems in building modern purple stash since this color rarely appears on fabrics. Purple is one of my favorites colors and I own probably each modern purple print, but still my stash of this color is not huge. I hope that this year it will change:)

  5. I love purples! I was in a block exchange where my colors were purple and aqua and I had a really difficult time finding purple fabrics in the stores. Reds are my favorite colors, so purple is a natural! Guess I'm one of those quiet kids, lol.

  6. I am beginning to bond with purple as we did my baby girl's nursery in a shade of purple and I wanted her to have more variety of color for clothes to wear so I am leaning toward purple in that area of my life too. Since that has occurred I have also made baby quilt for her as well in purple! lol Purple will prevail by the end of the year!! Perhaps;)

  7. OK...first, is that your stash??? Color me purple with envy! (or green, whatev...) Brown is my Achilles heel...I'm trying to bring brown into my world.

  8. I think everyone has that one color that they aren't the biggest fan of. For me, it's orange. I, however, love purple and was pleased to see that more people are trying to use it this year because of the Pantone color of the year. Can't wait to see what everyone makes with all of this purple fabric I'm seeing out there.

  9. I'm not against purple, but just not exactly for it. It bothers me that is has been co-opted, along with pink, as a little girl's colour. But right now I'm making an aqua and purple and white quilt, and I dug very deep into my stash to do so.

  10. I am not a purple person. i don't even dislike the color. i just tend not to use it. it takes up the last space in my stash by far.

  11. I love your new purples! Purple is my f.a.v.o.r.i.t.e. color ever and I'm so glad that it's appearing more lately. I have way too many blues, too ;)

  12. I like purple, but most of the purple fabrics I've found are....odd. Many of them don't play nice on the selves even. It's almost like fabric designers are trying to make people avoid purple. Or maybe it's the lighting in stores?

  13. I'm in a couple of bees and some of the ladies have requested purple in their blocks - and I have nothing...dust bunnies where purple should live. I made it my mission on Saturday, to find some purples to fill up the void - and was only moderatly successful. You're right - it is really hard to find! I got enough to keep me moving along but I am actively seeking more for my stash!

  14. I'm a huge purple fan. My purple stash is depleted too, but it's because I keep using all of it. And like you mentioned, it's not easy to find a good purple! :) Glad to see you using more. And Wowsa - your stash is awesome!

  15. I love purple. My couch in the family room is plum. I like deep purples better than soft purples.

  16. Oh I just love purple. And deep pink and fuchsia.... How hard I try not to, I always come back to them. said that, my stash of these colors isn't huge by any means, but I'm slowly working on it ;)
Just love the way you display your fabrics!

  17. Purple seems to be one of those colors you either love or hate! I'm not a fan but do have some very nice purples in my batik stash - just in case!! Speaking of Stash …. OMG …. your stash is beautiful! What do you use to keep them so neat and organized? They look like mini bolts!

  18. Whenever you post a picture of your stash I am:
    1: envious
2: concerned about fading on the folded edges.
    Am I crazy to worry?

  19. Purple! Purple! Purple! (It's my fave color bar none...) I have trouble with browns/earth tones, and when I need them, I can never find them in my stash. And now I have stash storage envy...

  20. I have never been a huge fan of purple either but now I have a project using lavender I cannot wait to start. I think they were right purple seems to be the color this year.

  21. I really struggle with purple, and the last few years I've made a conscious effort to use it more. I made two purple quilts for a purple loving sister in law, one I loved and the other not so much, although she was happy with both. I have learned to love a little pop of purple in a busy quilt though. I love the dark hues most, and tend to like the red-ish purples more than the blue-ish purples, but I think that goes along with being a warm color person.

I must tell you you have the most beautiful tidy stash! I love love love seeing it every time you post a photo.

  22. I'm in love with those purples you've added to your stash! I've noticed that there have been more purple options lately, thank goodness. Some of the purples in the True Colors lines are really beautiful if you're looking for more. :)

That medallion star design you've been working on for SSM is so incredible! I love all the purple in it. :D

  23. I've never been a purple fan either -- and the pantone color this year is technically "red-violet" -- makes it easier for me to accept than "purple" (-;

  24. I love purple--in either the cooler blue tones or warmer red tones. Yellow on the other hand? Please save me from all things yellow.

  25. Huge purple fan, although you are right about finding the right shade that plays well with others. It is sometimes impossible.

  26. Also jealous of your stash - whoah! Purple is one of my favorite colors - however, for some reason I am always making blue and/or green quilts! Step away from the blue!
