Starting the Kaleidoscope Quilt Along: Oh yes, I'm hosting another quilt-along! I hope you'll join me :) Here's the basic details, including a fun incentive for those who quilt along, and on Friday, I'll be sharing the fabric requirements and some thoughts on fabrics for this type of quilt. I got so excited after I finished the math this weekend that I had to do a test run block, which I am totally loving!
Spiderweb quilt: I've set this one aside for now, but I have at last finished the quilt top. I'm now pondering adding a simple white border, and starting to think about how I'm going to quilt this bad boy.
Modern Crosses baby quilt: I've made a few more blocks, and managed to cut all of the rest of the fabric I need for the top of this quilt. Now I just have to sit down and put the rest of it together!
Super secret project: I must've been a glutton for math-related punishment this holiday weekend, because I dusted this project off and spent a little time on double-checking my math and starting a digital mockup, trying to practice what I've learned in Illustrator this last week and make it stay in my brain. Stay tuned for more details on this one soon, I hope. :)
String Me Along bee quilt: I've started to receive some of my blocks back, although I don't quite know what I'll be doing with them just yet. Stay tuned!

Single Girl: Need to call my LQS, see if they got the long arm machine. They were supposed to receive it in early May. Hmmm...
New This Week:
Pillow Talk Swap Round 5: This round is going to be a quickie, but I got my partner last week and I'm super excited. I've got lots of ideas, and the only problem here is going to be reigning myself in. So far, I've pulled some fabrics to work with and draw inspiration from. How do you usually design your quilts? Do you sketch first, then pull fabric? Or do you let the fabrics speak to you? I usually do a bit of both, but this time, I had so many ideas, I thought pulling some fabric might help me narrow it down...
Prince Charming quilt: I cannot wait to play with these fabrics. A few more are still on their way to me, and will hopefully be in my mailbox today. I really enjoyed the blocks I made for do.Good.Stitches last month, and I'll be using that same block pattern for this quilt.
{Sew} Beautiful Bee June block - Cara's our queen bee this month, and we'll be making house blocks, inspired by this gallery. Cara plans to make a baby quilt to give to a NICU family on the long journey to bring their baby home. I'm really excited to get my fabric and get started on this one.

Eeek! I need another quilty project like I need a hole in my head, but I may have to join in on your quilt along! Those kaleidoscope blocks look just yummy. I know I oogled over your spiderweb quilt already, but I think I could stare at it for hours, its almost mesmerizing! Thanks for hosting the party this week!!
ReplyDeleteoh, and in answer to your question, I usually have a general quilt idea in mind (like I want to do something with HSTs or I want to work with hexies), and then pull my fabrics, and from there kind of finalize my design idea, and in typical fashion it often completely changes from my original idea!

p.s. the answer to your question is, "it depends." Sometimes it's about the fabric, sometimes it's about the pattern. More often than not, it starts with the pattern.

ReplyDeleteRe: process. I have none. Sometimes I start with a pattern, sometimes I start with fabric, sometimes I just start pulling and chopping and hoping for the best!
I don't do a lot of quilt designing (yet). what I have done has usually had a purpose already. Meaning, it's a block idea already in my head and I need to find the fabric... or it's a challenge and I've got fabrics or some other parameter to work with. I know - not much help right? Love your fabric stacks though. so pretty!

I love the spiderweb quilt! I started one way back in January, and I'm still stumped on how I might quilt it (even though the top's not anywhere near done). I'm excited to see what you decide!

I just LOVE your spiderweb quilt top! You could quilt it similar to how I did my raw-edge circle quilt at http://quiltfrenzy.blogspot.com/2011/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2011.html - flowers in the webs and leaves in the kites :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm totally loving prints charming too! I bought the aqua/yellow colorway and then when I had to run into the lqs on my b-day I treated myself to the pink/blue, too!
ReplyDeleteI can't decide what to do with them, so they will sit for now....I do think I want to keep this one, though! And I'm hoping to come up with a design that allows me to use both colorways together, since I can't pick a fav!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing all your WIP!! Gosh, I rarely used a quilt pattern for my quilts and when I do I quite often change it as I go along. LOL! Mostly I look at other quilts for inspiration and with colours already in my head I draw a design but even this changes as the quilt progresses. I tell my quilting friends that I 'quilt as I go' - and that's got nothing to do with the actually quilting process! I also tell them that I'm good at 'growing' my quilts 'cause often I just keeping adding border after border!!!!

That kaleidoscope QAL is tempting, but with kids out of school soon, a road trip and gardening taking over my routine, I'm going to have to pass, but can't wait to see the progress! Oh, and I almost always plan the quilt first, then pick fabrics.
